| Biography: |
Deeply resonant, like a fine malt whiskey; a voice and presence that evokes stillness in every corner of the room. Often compared to the likes of Tracy Chapman; Katey Brooks has become noted for delivering music that makes an audience feel that she is "...singing about us, as much as for us."
Carl Dolan, Venue Magazine.
Starting out as the host of a Singer/Songwriter showcase at the internationally acclaimed Bristol Folk House, Katey has quickly established herself on the UK Acoustic Music scene. Her poignant lyrics and captivating vocals have earned her several invitations to play in Europe, most recently in France, where Katey headlined the 2007 Bordeaux River Festival, playing in front of a swelling French crowd of thousands.
This year Katey was invited to play at Bath Abbey, as part of the International Music Festival. Playing an entirely acoustic set, she enthralled a sold-out Abbey of music lovers. Katey's mesmerizing live performances lead to her playing on the GWR FM's Amphitheatre Stage at the Bristol Harbourside Festival in July, as well as returning to Bristol Ashton Court Festival for the second year running, after giving a stunning performance last year.
No stranger to radio, Katey has been featured frequently, and performed live, on BBC Radio Bristol, as well as numerous other local radio stations. This exposure lead to her being featured on BBC Radio 1's Jo Whiley Show. Katey was also asked to do a live session on the online chart and radio show Pulse Rated, playing to over a million listeners worldwide. Following this, two of her tracks; 'Hunger' and 'True Speaker' reached the number one spot, both staying at the top of the Pulse chart for several consecutive weeks.
Katey recently supported Mercury Award Nominee Lou Rhodes (Lamb), as well as new acoustic sensation Newton Faulkner, and Folk legend Martin Simpson. She was also invited by Grammy Award Nominees Cutting Crew, to play at a sold out Brighton Komedia, on the last date of their British tour, this year. In June 2007, Katey enjoyed supporting and performing a duet with Patrick Duff (Strangelove), as well joint supporting at the Oxjam Festival with Jim Moray.
To date Katey has released two highly acclaimed EPs; 'Give Me The Words', and 'True Speaker'; which Venue Magazine reviewed as "Five Splendidly sad-eyed modern spirituals from Folk House head girl Brooks, whose vocal resemblance to Tracy Chapman remains uncanny." Both are available to purchase on her Myspace and website. Due to public demand, her new single 'You Will Be Free' will be released later this year.
An acoustic soul-songstress whose unique talent promises to make you sit up and listen, this is one up-and-coming artist that should not be missed.
